So I was pulling our camper home from a park when I notice a fault code on my brake controller. There was a power short somewhere in the brake system. I pulled over and the camper came to a stop with no issues. I looked at the drums and one of them was smoking. Hooray...
Well we pulled the drum and the guts came pouring out onto the ground. No exaggeration. Everything just crumbled out. We limped it home the last 6 miles after we put the drum and axle nut back on and we have an appointment to see if the warranty will pay for the issue.
I’ve n ever had this happen with a drum. Everything was new in September 2018 and there were no failure signs. All of the dr ums were always relatively cool to the touch and we had recently adjusted them after it sat for a couple months (winter months).
H ere’s a pic of the carnage immediately after pulling the drum:
Now I need to pull the other drums to make sure there aren’t any signs of premature wear because I’m sure Dexter will deny it if there is anything. Last thing I want to do is for it to sit out of commission only to be denied and given a bill for 135 bucks on top of then having to buy the parts and do it myself.

Me, upon discovering worn disc brakes:
I just installed low-dust pads and some new cryo-treated Brembo rotors to minimize rust and warping, plus I flushed the lines with new fluid and painted the calipers. Only took an hour!
Me with drum brakes:
Welp, time to buy a new car.

Ele ctric drums are easy at least. They come assembled 99% of the time and they are pretty cheap.

I get to spend my evening beating a drum off of a 2002 Saturn SL2 from the rust belt. I changed a couple brake lines and then realized the bleeders were rusted to high heaven. One came free with a vice grip, the other twisted off. Drum is stuck, I need a bigger hammer to break the rust weld between the hub and drum. I’m hoping the wheel cylinder bolts twist off nicely, that should make the job much quicker.

Yeah, I think this will be the last brake line job I ever do as a favor for someone. Just not worth it.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
You end up walking to get the car from the local Family Dollar after the wife walks home because it will no longer back up without locking the passenger rear wheel.

That sucks. Thankfully we could still pull it gingerly. Three functioning brakes and lots of engine braking

The brakes still work fine, so long as you don’t have to back up. I think one of the top springs broke, allowing the shoe to wedge against the drum in reverse.
